Multimedia Journalist, Documentary Filmmaker
Lee Hyun Choi is a journalist and documentary producer based in Seoul, who’s experienced at reporting across written, audio, and visual forms of storytelling. She has produced documentaries and news reports navigating various locales across Korea – from inside the demilitarized zone bordering North Korea to the seas of Jeju island at the southern tip of the country.
She is particularly attentive to stories of marginalized groups in Korea — whether based on race, gender, sexual orientation, disabilities — and seeks to bring their voices of to the forefront. In particular, her series of reports shedding light on the varied plights of Korean women (from the deepfake porn crisis targeting school girls, spycam and sexual abuse committed by renowned male K-pop idols, to the depths of anti-feminist backlash) have been read and watched by millions.
Lee Hyun has produced multiple investigative documentary films, breaking news TV reports, as well as current affairs and travel documentaries for a range of outlets, including the BBC, DW, Al Jazeera, CBC, and others.
Her written work and radio pieces have been published in the BBC, Voice of America, The Nation, and more.
